Villayón, where to eat and where to stay.

Updated: Jun 12, 2022

Villayón is a municipality in western Asturias, one of the least known regions of the Principality. But that does not make it any less attractive for tourists who want to disconnect and be in direct contact with nature. The water that springs freely from its mountains characterises this municipality, full of streams that give rise to small natural springs, impressive waterfalls or reservoirs, which the inhabitants of the area have known how to use as a source of energy since time immemorial. In Villayón, nature reveals itself to the traveller in all its fullness, and it is not difficult to discover semi-wild horses or fauna typical of the Atlantic forest, such as deer or wild boar, on one of the many mountain routes, such as the Dolmen da Filandoria circuit or the Mexica waterfall.

If you prefer a quieter plan in which the children can also participate, a route by car to the many attractions of the municipality, such as the Roman bridge of Polea or the recreational area of Las Virtudes, can be a good option.

We know that nature makes you hungry. That is why we have made a selection of places where you can recharge your batteries with a hearty Asturian stew, some fabada or a good rice pudding.

  • Casa Nito:

This restaurant is located in the capital of the council Villayón, about 5 km from the waterfalls of Oneta. They have a daily menu and you can eat à la carte for about 20E per person. House specials include cabbage stew, seafood soup and cheeks. Also highly recommended is the cottage cheese with honey and the "tarta de la abuela" and cheesecakes which they prepare with care every day. The bar has a small supermarket where you can buy the essentials, and if after a hearty meal you want to take a nap, they also run a hostel in the same building.

  • Camping la Cascada:

In an unbeatable location, between mountains and 50 metres from the Arbón water reservoir and Pozo Mouro. It has a small bar with a fireplace, a large dining room for 40 people and an adjacent picnic area. There is a daily menu and à la carte. Paellas are also prepared to order. We recommend making a reservation in advance, the owners are specially guest-friendly and speak English. In summer there is an outdoor pool for campers and visitors.

  • Casa Fonso:

In the village of Valdedo, it is on the route to the Dolmen de Barandón and near las Virturdes sanctuary. Although Casa Fonso does not serve meals, it is one of the few traditional bar shops still open since it was founded in 1945. Manolo and Teresa run the shop inherited from their parents, where you can find everything from building materials to food and hiking boots. If you happen to be in the area, don't miss a visit and take the opportunity to stock up on supplies for the trip. It is located near Las Virtudes on the main road that passes through Valdedo, at the junction of the roads that lead to Boal and Barandón.
