Gijón has some of the best city beaches in Asturias, do you want to know how which one to choose in this fantastic city in the north of Spain? this mini-guide have you covered!
Gijón has a total of 10 beaches; five are directly in the city, and another five are in the rural area.
San Lorenzo beach
Among the urban beaches, San Lorenzo Beach stands out. This natural sandy area is probably the best known in the whole of Asturias, it is 1.5 km long and has 3 km of lively promenade, which the locals call "El Muro" the Wall. Perfect all year round, for swimming, surfing or just having ice cream and enjoying the sound of the sea. It is considered one of the best urban beaches to learn how to surf. Of course, it is guarded throughout the summer season and has showers, toilets and footbaths along its entire length.
Poniente beach
This is another of the urban beaches located on the other side of the Cimadevilla neighbourhood, next to the marina. This beach is smaller, but it is sheltered from the north-easterly winds, which makes it ideal for windy days. This beach has a permanent green flag, meaning swimming is always allowed and is specially adapted for people with reduced mobility and for beginners in water sports. Very close to the beach we find the Gijón Aquarium and the only seawater spa in Asturias, Thalasoponiente, where even in case of rain, we can relax in its outdoor pool overlooking the beach.
El Arbeyal beach
This is a 500m long sandy beach located in the western area of Gijón. This quiet beach has a children's play area and supervised bathing areas throughout the summer season. If you are not near the neighbourhoods of Natahoyo or La Calzada, among which it is located, you can reach this beach with bus lines 4 and 6.
Peñarubia
Rural beach but very close to the city This beach is located between cliffs and its access, which is not very easy, makes it a sheltered beach, frequented by naturists and nudists. Its fossil wealth and its sandy and rocky soil make it an ideal beach for underwater fishing, diving or surfing. It can be reached on foot along the coastal path that goes from El Rinconín to La Ñora, or from the Providencia road. The bus lines that will leave you near the beach are 14 and 25.
El Estaño beach
Among the rural beaches, La Ñora and El Estaño are our favourites.
Both can be reached on foot along the coast from Providencia or by car, but if you want to go by bus, choose the Estaño, lines 14 or 25. El Indio bar, a few metres from the beach, has a chillout area ideal for cooling off in the evening.
La Ñora
This small beach is, in our opinion, one of the most beautiful in Gijón. The Ñora River flows into it, where the little ones find the ideal depth to develop their sand fort-building skills without any danger. It has a wonderful promenade among eucalyptus trees that leads to a viewpoint over the cliff. It is guarded by lifeguard services throughout the summer, and a couple of bars help to lower the temperatures when the heat gets too hot. To get there, you can take the coastal path that runs along the coast from El Rinconín, or you can get there by car.
